Marriage, in the eyes of the Church, is far more than a legal contract or romantic commitment. It is a sacrament, a visible sign of God’s invisible grace. When a baptized man and woman freely give themselves to one another in love, God establishes a sacred covenant between them—mirroring Christ’s unbreakable love for His Church.
In this lifelong union, the couple becomes a living witness to the Gospel, called not only to mutual love and support, but to sanctify one another, build up the Church, and raise their family in faith. Their home becomes a domestic church—a sacred place where God is present and glorified in daily life.
What Makes Marriage a Sacrament?
According to Catholic teaching, a valid marriage between two baptized Christians is elevated to a sacrament when:
This sacramental bond is indissoluble and sealed by God. The grace of the sacrament strengthens couples in times of difficulty and helps them grow in holiness through their love, service, and forgiveness of one another.
“The love of husband and wife is the force that welds society together. … The family is the first essential cell of human society.”
— St. John Chrysostom
“Marriage is the icon of God’s love for us. Indeed, God is also communion: the three Persons of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit live eternally in perfect unity. And this is the mystery of marriage: God makes of the two spouses one single life.”
— Pope Francis, General Audience, April 2, 2014
